About the service

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a tooth-colored composite that we sculpt right onto your tooth to smooth out small flaws. At our Sonoma, CA office, dental bonding is one of the quickest, most conservative ways to refresh a smile, with little to no enamel removed. It's one of the most conservative ways we offer to improve a smile, and it often takes just one visit.

When cosmetic bonding makes sense

  • A small chip on a front tooth
  • A little gap you'd like to close
  • Uneven or worn edges that catch your eye
  • Some stains that whitening can't lift
  • A tooth that looks a bit shorter or smaller than its neighbors

Bonding pairs nicely with shaping and contouring, where we gently smooth and balance the edges of your teeth. Small changes, real difference.

What to expect at your bonding visit

  1. A quick chat. You tell us what bothers you, and Dr. Oliver shows you what bonding can and can't do.
  2. Shade matching. We pick a composite shade that blends in with your natural teeth.
  3. Sculpting. Dr. Oliver shapes the composite by hand, often with no numbing needed, and we go at your pace.
  4. Polish and check. We harden the material, polish it smooth, and check your bite before you head out.

Why Sonoma patients choose bonding and contouring

Bonding is hands-on, artistic work, and Dr. Oliver treats it that way: layering, shaping, and polishing until the tooth looks like it was always yours. If your teeth are darker overall, we usually suggest teeth whitening first, so we can match your bonding to your brighter shade. If you're weighing options, bonding and porcelain veneers are both valuable: bonding for small fixes on one or a few teeth, veneers for bigger changes in shape and color.

Why tooth bonding matters over time

A small chip or rough edge can catch, wear, or grow bigger if it's left alone. Bonding smooths it over early and protects the tooth, without committing you to more than you need. With good care, bonding lasts for years and can be touched up easily.

Just skip biting nails, pens, or ice. Curious how the options compare? Our post on bonding, contouring, and veneers breaks it down.

Small fixes, made with heart

With a background in art, hospitality, and science, Dr. Riley Oliver opened Sonoma Springs Dental to offer warm, personal care held to an exceptionally high standard. A University of the Pacific graduate, she loves bonding because it's hands-on sculpting: she shapes and polishes each tooth by hand until the edges and shade look just right. That means small fixes that look natural, feel smooth, and leave as much of your own tooth as possible.
"Don't let it fool you. We have a lot of fun here, but we focus on extremely high-quality care. You're going to get that perfect little mix."

Dental bonding FAQs

What is dental bonding?

Bonding is a tooth-colored composite that we sculpt right onto your tooth to fix small flaws. It works well for chips, small gaps, uneven edges, and some stains. It's one of the simplest, most conservative ways to refresh your smile.

What is tooth shaping and contouring?

Contouring is a gentle reshaping of your teeth to smooth uneven edges and balance their shape. We often pair shaping and contouring with bonding, adding material where a tooth needs it and softening edges where it doesn't. Small changes can make a real difference, as we explain in our post on bonding and contouring.

Does bonding hurt?

No, most people find it very comfortable. Bonding removes little to no enamel, so it's often done without numbing at all. If you'd feel better with it, just tell us. We'll go at your pace.

How long does dental bonding take?

Often just one visit. We match the shade to your natural teeth, sculpt the composite, harden it, and polish it smooth. You walk out with the finished result the same day.

How long does bonding last?

With good care, bonding can last for years. Composite can chip or pick up stains over time, but the nice part is that it's easy to touch up or refresh. Avoid biting your nails, pens, or ice, and keep up with regular cleanings to keep it looking its best.

Should I get bonding or veneers?

Both are great options, each right at a different stage. Bonding is quick and conservative, ideal for a chip or small gap on one or a few teeth. Veneers are a longer-lasting, more stain-resistant choice for changing the shape and color of several teeth. We'll help you decide what fits your smile and your plans.

Does insurance cover dental bonding?

It depends on why you need it. Cosmetic bonding usually isn't covered, but bonding to repair a chipped tooth is sometimes partly covered. We accept all major insurances and will walk you through your estimate before we start. For larger cosmetic cases, you can pay monthly with Cherry or CareCredit.

Where can I get dental bonding near me in Sonoma?
